Course Description

This course delves into the life and influential reign of Omar Ibn Abdulaziz, the eighth Umayyad caliph, who ruled from 717 to 720 CE. Often regarded as the first mujaddid (reviver) in Islamic history, Omar’s reign is celebrated for its significant reforms and contributions to the revitalization of Islamic discourse.

Objectives:

  • Understand the historical context of the Umayyad Caliphate and the challenges it faced prior to Omar
  • Examine the life and character of Omar Ibn Abdulaziz, highlighting his piety, justice, and wisdom.
  • Analyze the key reforms implemented during his reign, including economic justice, social equality, and the promotion of knowledge.
  • Explore Omar’s role in the compilation of Hadith and the encouragement of scholarly discourse.
